I ended up at UK for many reasons, but one of the main ones was that I saw this college would be the place where I would learn how to be the best social worker I can be! I decided on social work because of the variety of practice options and career opportunities. This is exactly the experience that I have had with social work and it has led me to want to promote the welfare of children, as well as those struggling with mental illness. Along the way, criminal justice has become an area of interest for me as well. While at UK, I have been involved in the College of Social Work’s social media team, K-Crew, and two campus ministries: St. Augustine’s and the Newman Center, and plan on continuing to look for ways to be involved on campus!

Hi future Wildcats! I am current senior in the Social Work program. My six older siblings attended UK and I have grown up on campus. I couldn’t wait to become a Wildcat for as long as I remember. I took the Intro to Social Work class as freshman not even knowing what social work really was. After learning everything that encompasses the profession, I knew that social work is what I was meant to be doing. I participated in the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program which changed my life and sparked my passion to change the drug and crime trajectory. My future goal is to get my Master of Social Work. I love to work with students who are interested in social work or UK in general, so do not hesitate to contact me!

Practice Interests: child welfare
Coming from Illinois, I found myself at UK through the amazing College of Social Work, scholarship opportunities, and environment of a big university. In high school, I knew that social work was the right path for me. After being active in service work through my community and church, I felt the calling to help others. I identified the most with social work because of the diverse opportunities for public aid and advocacy. Now, I am heading towards graduation in December 2016. I am a Public Child Welfare Certification Program Student and will therefore be working towards a career with the Department of Community Based Services in child welfare. At UK, I am also a Parent and Family Ambassador, a member of K Crew, serve on the College of Social Work Social Media Team, and am a member of the Social Work Association. I also maintain a job off-campus. If you have any questions about the UK COSW or college life in general, do not hesitate to contact me via email! Go Cats!

Hey y’all! My name is Destini Engle and I am a senior here at the University of Kentucky. When I was in high school and my friends began the long process of choosing colleges and applying to multiple universities, I knew that there was only one place I wanted to be and that was right here at the University of Kentucky! When I started my college career here, I came in as a business management major but soon realized that was not the track for me. When I changed my major to social work, I automatically felt empowered and that I could make a difference. In the future, I hope to work either as a victim’s advocate in the court system or work for programs that help to empower youth. At UK, I am involved with Christian Student Fellowship, Team Wildcat, and I am active member in the Phi Mu sorority. I would love to talk to you a little more about my experience in the College of Social Work, so if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me!

I am involved in the student Social Work Association, the social media team for the college, and I am the peer instructor for the pre-social work UK101 class. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Welcome to UK!

Practice Interests: child welfare and education
Even though I am from Louisville, I have been a UK fan all of my life. (I am the only one in my entire family.) I chose social work because I want to help others help themselves and social work has the most holistic approach, including physical, emotional, financial, and psychological support. I want to make a difference. I plan on working with children and one day becoming a high school English teacher in an impoverished area. My background in social work will enable me to help my students beyond the classroom. I am a member of the club lacrosse team, a Sunday school teacher, and I am involved with tutoring high school students through Operation

Welcome to UK, fellow Wildcats! Choosing to attend UK not only expanded my educational capabilities, but allowed me to be independent outside of my comfort zone back home. Being involved on campus is important as you contribute to diversity. During undergrad I was a Resident Advisor, Treasurer of UK Black Voices, and a Social Work Ambassador. As a graduate student I am in choir and volunteering along with my studies. Upon completing graduate school I plan to work in a hospital or a primary care office to continue in the growing field of Integrated Behavioral Health.

When visiting colleges, I knew UK was for me because of its various degree options and increasing diversity. It was not too far from home and the staff and students were very pleasant and helpful. I chose Social Work because I have a strong passion for listening and problem solving. I am currently in the Public Child Welfare Certification Program and involved in CARES and the Social Work Association. After earning my BASW, I plan to pursue my MSW at UK with a concentration in clinical SW.

I am a recent graduate of the UK BASW program loved the school and Social Work program so much I came back for another year to complete my MSW with a School Social Work Certificate. I am interested in social work because I enjoy working with children and believe that in order for students to be successful in the classroom they must have their basic needs meet. I love the idea of being able to assist students both academically and for the real world. As an undergrad I was a member of Alpha Phi, served as Co-President of the Social Work Association, and was a student ambassador. I am currently doing my practicum at Woodford County High School.

Hello Big Blue Nation! I am a graduate student here at UK’s College of Social Work. I am originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania and as soon as I graduated high school, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. I served four years on active duty, and then four more in the reserves. During my undergraduate career here, I was a very much so a nontraditional student. Although challenging at times, I made it through and graduated May 2015 with a BASW. I am now working towards my Master’s in Social Work and hope one day to make a difference in the lives of our service members and their families. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

I’m a Wildcat for life! I was born and raised in Lexington and can’t imagine living anywhere else. UK was the obvious choice for me. Social work turned out to be one of those choices as well; it pretty much fell into my lap. The first time I heard about it as a major, I decided that it was exactly what I had been searching for and that has proven to be true over and over again. I’m still not sure what I want to do with my MSW but am excited about the wide range of options that come with social work. I know that no matter where I end up, I’ll be part of a profession that’s changing the world.
Hometown: London, England
Practice Interests: macro practice, gerontology, mental health
Hello everyone! I ended up at UK when my family moved here from North Carolina, although I’m originally from London, England. I have grown to enjoy macro social work practice through my time in the BASW program, and both the flexibility of the classes available and the diverse nature of the faculty have allowed me to shift my focus with my evolving practice interests. I am a member of the Social Work Association here at the college, and through the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at UK I am involved with the local chapter of the Alzheimers Association. My practicum placements have so far presented me with great networking and job opportunities after graduation, and I plan on returning to UK to complete my MSW degree after I graduate in December 2015. If there is anything you’d like to know about my time here at UK as a non-traditional student, please feel free to email me. I’ll be happy to help where I can!
