Our return to campus is predicated upon the guiding principle that the health, safety, and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff is of utmost importance to the College of Social Work. We remain committed to identifying and implementing best practices related to ensuring you have every opportunity to be successful this semester. We know that the UK education extends well beyond the classroom to include the transformative curricular and co-curricular education that emphasizes learning, well-being, equity, inclusivity and access, and community and belonging and we remain steadfast in our efforts for you to engage in these opportunities.

Our Process

We are unwavering in our commitment to you, our students, and will ensure a transparent communication process that allows timely updates as additional information becomes available. The following is a brief summary of some of the efforts UK and our college is making to ensure your safe return to campus:

Fall Semester Calendar

  • All undergraduate and graduate social work classes will begin on August 17th with all in-person instruction ending the week of Thanksgiving. The only break for the fall semester will be the state election holiday on November 3rd with previously scheduled Labor Day and Fall Break now becoming instructional days.
  • Finals will be administered remotely the week following Thanksgiving.

Face Covering/Distancing Policy

The Senate Council endorses the following recommended syllabus statements for faculty teaching face-to-face courses.

  • In accordance with University guidelines, students must wear UK-approved face coverings in the classroom and academic buildings (e.g., faculty offices, laboratories, libraries, performance/design studios, and common study areas where students might congregate). If UK-approved face coverings are not worn over the nose and mouth, students will be asked to leave the classroom.
  • Students should complete their daily online wellness screening before accessing university facilities and arriving to class.
  • Students should not move chairs or barriers in classrooms and should socially distance at all times, leaving a six (6) foot radius from other people. Masks and hand sanitizer can be found {specific location in building} if needed.
  • Students should leave enough space when entering and exiting a room. Students should not crowd doorways at the beginning or end of class.
  • The instructor may choose to remove a mask when pedagogically necessary at the front of the classroom and behind a clear barrier. The instructor’s mask will be replaced when it is no longer necessary to have it removed, or when the class meeting is complete.

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Students will be provided a START (Screening, Testing and Tracing to Accelerate Restart and Transition) kit with related instructions and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • All students, faculty and staff must self-assess for COVID symptoms daily, according to CDC recommended guidelines.
  • Masks will be required unless individuals are alone in a room, eating, drinking, or exercising or when it interferes with required curricular activities.

Class Recording Notification

The University of Kentucky Student Code of Conduct defines Invasion of Privacy as using electronic or other devices to make a photographic, audio, or video record of any person without their prior knowledge or consent when such a recording is likely to cause injury or distress.

Meetings of this course may be recorded. All video and audio recordings of lecturers and class meetings, provided by the instructors, are for educational use by students in this class only. They are available only through the Canvas shell for this course and are not to be copied, shared, or redistributed.

As addressed in the Student Code of Conduct, students are expected to follow appropriate university policies and maintain the security of linkblue accounts used to access recorded class materials. Recordings may not be reproduced, shared with those not enrolled in the class, or uploaded to other online environments.

If the instructor or a University of Kentucky office plans any other uses for the recordings, beyond this class, students identifiable in the recordings will be notified to request consent prior to such use. In anticipation of such cases, students may be asked to complete an “authorization of use” form by a faculty member.

Video and audio recordings by students are not permitted during the class unless the student has received prior permission from the instructor. Any sharing, distribution, and or uploading of these recordings outside of the parameters of the class is prohibited. Students with specific recording accommodations approved by the Disability Resource Center should present their official documentation to the instructor.

All content for this course, including handouts, assignments, and lectures are the intellectual property of the instructors and cannot be reproduced or sold without prior permission from the instructors. A student may use the material for reasonable educational and professional purposes extending beyond this class, such as studying for a comprehensive or qualifying examination in a degree program, preparing for a professional or certification examination, or to assist in fulfilling responsibilities at a job or internship.

Guidance for Course Instruction

  • Those courses that are scheduled to meet face to face will maintain some elements of in person lectures.
    • Despite some elements of in-person lectures, course structures will vary, depending upon the class size and classroom capacity. All classroom capacities will be limited in comparison to prior semesters in order to enforce social distancing guidelines.
    • Because class size will be limited, students can expect some measure of virtual access. An example might be a class of 35 that meets T/Th may have half the class meet on Tuesday while the other half attends through Zoom. Then on Thursday, the other half will attend in person, etc. Instructors will communicate with students to devise a plan based upon the course, the enrollment and the classroom that allows maximum engagement in the class materials.
  • Our plan for field remains robust in providing learning opportunities for students in practicum at social service agencies. Please visit our field page.
  • Students considered at higher risk can work with Student and Academic Life and the Disability Resource Center to identify ways to mitigate risk. Students should also speak to their instructor regarding options to ensure safety and security in accessing course content.

Residence Halls and Campus Common Areas

  • Specific plans for individual rooms, halls and areas will be developed based on area limitations and options. Occupancy in rooms should be guided by overall room capacity.
  • Elevators will limit capacity in accordance with recommendations from CDC- or state-issued guidelines. Signage will be utilized to promote social distancing.
  • Residential dining will comply with CDC and state guidelines and will operate with reduced seating with served (rather than self-serve) stations and carry-out services.
  • Physical health protection barriers will be utilized to reduce aerosolization spread where appropriate (e.g., plexiglass or clear plastic sneeze guards at reception areas, food services and other areas with a high frequency of face-to-face contact).

Common Health Practices

  • Social distancing practices will be required. Individuals should be at least six feet apart unless required by specific curricular activities.
  • Specific plans for individual classrooms and common areas will be developed based on area limitations and options. Occupancy in rooms will be guided by overall room capacity.
  • Enhanced sanitation of the environment will be conducted, and adequate hand sanitizer will be provided. Plans for regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces and common areas will be implemented.
  • Key wellness stations will provide educational materials and maintain a supply of PPE as needed and as available (face masks, disinfectants, etc.). Additional assessments may occur at these stations as evidence and technology evolves.
  •  Anyone with a positive screen (one or more symptoms) will be instructed not to enter any campus buildings and should contact a health care provider or University Health Service for instructions on viral testing, appropriate quarantine, and care.
  • Viral testing will be conducted on all individuals with symptoms or for those exposed to COVID-19-infected individuals.
  • To reduce the level of asymptomatic spread leading to new infections, initial viral testing for students will be conducted prior to or during the first week of returning to campus, with timing and specifics dependent on emerging evidence and data.
  • Additional viral testing should be encouraged and available for all faculty and staff, particularly among individuals in selected groups and prioritized areas where social distancing is more challenging (e.g. individuals with high-risk exposure including recent contact with an infected individual).
  • Specific recommendations may be made as more evidence emerges on its usefulness.

Campus Facilities and Well-Being Resources

  • Tele-options or remote work options for key services will remain in place when possible.
  • Transportation will be monitored and modified related to frequency and occupancy to assure proper social distancing.
  • Enhanced sanitation of the environment will be conducted, and adequate hand sanitizer will be provided (e.g., alcohol-based hand rubs or handwashing with soap and water, plans for regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces and common areas).
  • In accordance with CDC guidelines, the University will utilize virtual services to support academic success through programming in units such as CARES, Disability Resource Center, MathSkellar, The Study, Stuckert Career Center, Transformative Learning, and The Writing Center.
  • Our campus well-being resources remain available to students, the Counseling Center, Big Blue Pantry, etc. will be open this fall to support students.
