Undocumented Immigrants in Higher Education: Trauma Challenges

Concentration -

Abstract

This capstone explores the significant trauma experienced by undocumented immigrant students in higher education and suggests social work practice frameworks for supporting this population. It aims to raise awareness of the vulnerabilities they face due to fear of deportation, discrimination, and financial instability, and how these factors impact their academic performance and mental health. The capstone conducts a systematic literature review, conceptual analysis, and practical application to promote trauma-informed care and advocate for policies that support undocumented students. Its goal is to equip social workers with the skills and knowledge needed to create welcoming learning environments for undocumented students. Social workers will be encouraged to train in trauma-informed care and culturally competent practices to assist these students in addressing their challenges. These comprehensive approaches aim to foster resilience and academic success while ensuring undocumented students feel safe, supported, valued, and empowered in their educational journeys. Ultimately, it is crucial to establish this framework to enable these students to thrive academically and personally, paving the way for a better future.
