The presentation will start with an introduction to the research, offering an overview of the capstone project and its importance in understanding the barriers women of color face in higher education leadership. It will then explore the concept of intersectionality and discuss its relevance to women of color’s experiences in academic environments. The discussion will then focus on the specific challenges these leaders encounter, including systemic racism, gender bias, and cultural stereotypes. The presentation will also examine how these challenges affect professional advancement, well-being, and feelings of belonging in academic settings. It will provide insights into the experiences of women of color, highlighting their resilience and strategies to overcome obstacles. The importance of diversity in leadership will also be discussed, emphasizing how diverse perspectives enhance decision-making and drive innovation in higher education institutions. The presentation will include practical recommendations for establishing peer leadership circles within higher education institutions. These circles aim to create inclusive environments that foster the leadership development of women of color. It will conclude with a summary of the findings and a call to action for meaningful policy changes that promote equity, ensuring that women of color can thrive in leadership roles and play a vital role in shaping the future of higher education.

Biography

Shannon Louise Woods is a dedicated professional with a robust academic background and extensive experience in social work and human resources. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management, and a Master of Social Work (MSW). As a licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Doctoral Candidate, Shannon is devoted to advancing her knowledge and expertise in her field while advocating for social justice and equity.
As a HUD-VASH Case Manager, Shannon provides essential support and resources to veterans experiencing homelessness, helping them navigate complex systems to achieve stability and self-sufficiency. Additionally, she works part-time as a Mental Health Therapist, enhancing her clients' mental well-being, addressing their unique challenges, and promoting resilience. Shannon is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Her research interests encompass aging and economic security, intersectionality, and identity, reflecting her commitment to understanding the multifaceted issues that affect diverse communities.
Her Capstone Project critically examines the barriers and intersectional challenges faced by women of color in leadership positions within higher education, highlighting the systemic obstacles that hinder their advancement. Although she has not published to date, Shannon's dedication to her field is evident through her ongoing pursuit of knowledge and professional development. With a strong commitment to social justice and advocacy, Shannon Louise Woods aims to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those she serves, fostering positive change within her community and beyond.
