Suicide in Schools: Prevention & Postvention

Over 48,000 people in the US die by suicide each year including more than 6,000 teens. Each suicide leaves an

entire continuum of people left behind, especially in school settings. Dr. Cerel will describe recent research

that describes how many people are left behind after suicide and how exposure to suicide impacts a wide

range of people. She will discuss how postvention in schools can help a wide range of students, families, and

staff. In addition, the concept of universal safety planning will be described and an exercise that can be used

with teens will be taught.

Dr. Cerel is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of

Kentucky. Her research has focused on suicide bereavement, suicide attempt survivors, and suicide prevention.

She completed her Ph.D. at Ohio State University, an internship and post-doctoral fellowship at West Virginia

University and a post-doctoral fellowship specifically in suicide prevention at the University of Rochester. She

has served as Research Division Chair and Board Chair of the American Association of Suicidology. She is the

author of over 65 academic publications and co-author of Seeking Hope: Stories of the Suicide Bereaved. Her

work has been funded by the Military Suicide Research Consortium from the U.S. Department of Defense, the

CDC, SAMSHA, SPAN-USA and AFSP. She is a Board member and former chair, Kentucky Suicide Prevention

Group, Inc. and Editorial Board Member, Suicide, and Life-Threatening Behavior.
