SUMMARY:Kinship Live Virtual Webinar Training – “Parenting Series: Dealing With ADHD\, Depression\, And Anxiety In Kids”
DESCRIPTION:ADHD\, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder\, is one of the “most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood” (according to the CDC) that is often carried into adulthood\, but research is beginning to show that many children with ADHD often struggle with co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. Each of these diagnoses by themselves can be challenging\, even overwhelming for children and caregivers; however\, for children struggling with more than one of these diagnoses\, it can be even more difficult. \nJoin us for this webinar where we will focus on understanding what each of these diagnoses are\, the symptoms kids can have\, and ways caregivers can support and care for their kids. We’ll also spend some time understanding and considering how this can change for children dealing with multiple diagnoses and how to provide the best care. \nREGISTER NOW \nAbout the Trainer: \nDr. Marlene Huff\, LCSW\, PhD is an individual counselor with Creative Solutions of the Bluegrass\, LLC\, in Lexington\, KY. Dr. Huff specializes in Mental Health\, Addiction (Substance Use Disorder)\, Relationship issues\, and is a Marriage & Family Therapist. Dr. Huff has 16 years experience in the field treating conditions such as stress\, depressive disorders\, mood disorders\, ADHD\, anger management\, domestic violence\, and parenting issues. Dr. Huff is presently writing a book discussing Kinship Care. \nDr. Huff attended the University of Kentucky\, studying psychology as an undergraduate\, and achieving her Master’s Degree and PhD in Social Work and Medical Sociology from the University of Kentucky in 1999. \nPlease note: Although this LIVE webinar is designed to be an informative\, educational\, and helpful resource for kinship families caring for relative or fictive kin children\, anyone is welcome to attend including foster parents\, professionals\, students\, or community members. \nIt is our hope that by participating in this LIVE webinar\, attendees will receive educational and helpful information. DESCRIPTION:CORE TEEN (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) \nSession 3\n \nDeveloping & Sustaining a Healthy & Supportive Relationship with Your Youth  \nFebruary 22nd\, 2024 \n6:30 PM-8:30 PM EST \nVia Zoom \nStephanie Spires \n2 credit hours \nNavigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. The University of Kentucky Training Resource Centers\, in collaboration with DCBS\, will offer training to equip foster and adoptive parents to meet the needs of older youth who have moderate to serious emotional and behavioral health challenges. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #3\, piloted by the Foster Parent Training Program at the UK College of Social Work\, parents will further explore how ambiguous loss is a feeling of grief or distress combined with confusion about the lost person or relationship. \nWith ambiguous loss\, there is no verification of death or certainty that the person will come back or return to the way they used to be. Ambiguous loss is a loss that occurs without a significant likelihood of reaching emotional closure or a clear understanding. There are two types of ambiguous loss: \n\nWhen a person is physically present but psychologically unavailable.\nWhen a person is physically absent but psychologically present.\n(This type most commonly occurs in foster care and adoption.)\n\nFoster and adoptive youth feel ambiguous loss when they are removed from their homes\, change schools\, and have multiple placements. Each incident requires them to lose a friend\, a connection\, and a sense of familiarity and trust. Dealing with ambiguous loss can create grief\, confusion\, fear\, and uncertainty in foster youth. As a result\, foster/adoptive youth who have experienced trauma may struggle with building relationships and behavioral issues. To help children better manage these repeated traumas\, foster and adoptive parents\, must be sensitive to the role ambiguous loss plays in foster and adopted children’s behavior. During this session caregivers will: \n\nDetermine the impact of loss and grief on teens.\nLearn how to increase attachment and strengthen their relationship with youth.\nLearn how to deepen their connection with their youth or the youth they will parent.\n\nThis session will help to mitigate the trauma associated with ambiguous loss and grief. SUMMARY:Child Development: Ages 0-5
DESCRIPTION:Child Development 0-5 explores the typical milestones\, or skills\, that children develop from birth through age 5. It offers resources that caregivers can utilize to determine if a developmental screening may be warranted. Strategies for successfully advocating on behalf of children to receive needed assessments and services are explored. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify typical developmental milestones for children age 0 – 5.\nDetermine when to seek a developmental screening or assessment for children 0 – 5.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. DESCRIPTION:New Placements: Preparing & Adjusting Family Roles will help foster and adoptive parents introduce new placements into their existing family units. It gives ideas and strategies on how to prepare children and family already in the home to best welcome a new foster or adoptive child. It also describes challenges children already in the home (biological\, foster\, adoptive\, step\, etc.) may be confronted with when a new child is introduced into the nuclear family. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nPrepare their family to welcome a new foster or adoptive placement into their existing family structure.\nUtilize strategies to address and overcome perceived challenges felt by children already in their home as well as new placements to make the transition smoother.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents.
