DESCRIPTION:Raising children when they are small can be fun–from reading story books to learning ABC’s and counting with cute rhymes\, the possibilities to create wonderful bonds and fun times together are seemingly endless.  But as they grow and are approach their teen years\, you may notice changes in their moods and behaviors.  Their emotional reactions and opinions become more pronounced\, they may have lost interest in their toys or hobbies and instead become more interested in their appearances and peer group. \nYou may be thinking that your young child is already turning into a teenager and may be asking yourself “What do I do now?”  Whether you have a tween (8-12 years old) or a teen (age 12- 19)\, this is the group for you! SUMMARY:Finding Black Histories in Archival Court Records
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 9-10 for a series of conversations with The Honorable Robert L. Wilkins\, Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. \nIn a roundtable discussion and public lecture\, Wilkins will discuss his remarkable life\, career\, and family history and reflect on the complicated meanings of liberty\, justice\, and equality in a country still reckoning with the legacy of slavery. \n\nFinding Black Histories in Archival Court Records\nPUBLIC ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION \nOctober 9  |  10am – 11:30am  |  M.I. King Library\, Great Hall \nA native of Muncie\, Indiana\, Judge Wilkins has spent years tracing his family’s roots\, some of which stretch to Muhlenberg County\, Kentucky\, where an enslaved ancestor named Edy Salsbury sued for and won freedom for herself and all the other enslaved people on the Salsbury plantation\, which later became the Salsbury Free Negro Settlement. \nJudge Wilkins will discuss how an entry in UK Libraries’ Notable Kentucky African Americans database led him to find his family’s stories in court records at the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives\, and will share his experience of working with historical legal documents and other archival materials. He will be joined by Kentucky State Archivist Rusty Heckaman\, UK Historian Vanessa Holden\, and UK Special Collections Librarian Reinette Jones. \nSeating is limited\, and RSVPs are required. \n\nBoth events are free and open to the public. They are sponsored by UK Libraries\, the Rosenberg College of Law\, the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies\, and the John G. Heyburn II Initiative for Excellence in the Federal Judiciary. \nU.S. Judge Robert L. Wilkins served as a public defender and a partner in private practice before his appointment to the federal judiciary in 2010. He also served as the lead plaintiff in a landmark civil rights case\, Wilkins\, et al. v. State of Maryland\, and played a key role in the establishment of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture\, which opened in 2016 on the National Mall. Judge Wilkins was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on January 15\, 2014.

DESCRIPTION:Losing a relationship\, a person\, a role/way of life\, or even losing the idea of being a grandma/uncle/aunt/sibling can be difficult and hard to navigate on your own.  The emotions you feel are so specific to what you are going through and can make you feel all alone at the same time. DESCRIPTION:Caring for a child that you are not related to is challenging–but when you are taking care of a child that you love\, be it a neighbor\, a friend’s child\, or your child’s friend\, suddenly it all makes sense\, even if it is still difficult to navigate.  How do you raise someone else’s child? Are there any supports out there for those fictive kin caregivers? What about visits? \nIn this group\, we will explore the challenges of being a fictive kin caregiver and identify resources that are out there while we support each other in our own fictive kin journeys. \nFacilitated by Heather Hall\, a fictive kin caregiver and an advocate for fictive kin caregivers with Kentucky legislature\, this group will provide a supportive\, safe space where fictive kin caregivers can come to get answers\, find relationships\, and hopefully continued support for their journey. \nREGISTER NOW
