DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. SUMMARY:Medically Complex Join Hands Together Virtual Training
DESCRIPTION:This training will take place via virtual live Zoom meeting. Participants will be required to have a laptop or tablet with reliable internet connection to participate in the live\, interactive training. Participants will be asked to utilize camera and microphone capabilities\, and will be asked to participate using chat features\, Q&A and polls. \nThis is the initial training that all foster parents must complete before they can be approved as a Medically Complex home. This training is for DCBS and PCP foster parents and workers. \nAll participants must be registered in TRIS. \nPrior to attending this training\, participants must complete a series of web-based trainings. These trainings are: Medically Complex: Orientation\, Medically Complex: Standards of Practice\, Medically Complex: Growth and Development\, and Medically Complex: Nutrition. \nPrerequisite Information:\nMUST be completed no later than the date listed in the description. There are four (4) web-based trainings that serve as prerequisites to the initial medically complex training\, Join Hands Together. These include Medically Complex Orientation (2.25 hours)\, DCBS Standards of Practice for Medically Complex Homes (1 hour)\, Growth and Development (1 hour) and Nutrition (1 hour). These are required for all foster parents before they attend the in-person or virtual Join Hands Together training\, which provides the remaining 6.75 hours of initial Medically Complex training credit. \nSpecial Information:\nUpon completion of prerequisite trainings\, a link to the Zoom registration form will be sent to participants. Please complete the Zoom registration form as soon as possible. Once the Zoom registration form is completed\, participants will automatically receive a URL link to the virtual Zoom meeting. Each participant will be required to use their personal email addresses when registering for the training. If a couple wishes to attend the same training sessions using the same computer\, both participants names will need to be listed on the Zoom registration form in order for each person to receive training credit. \nYour full attention is required during the training. DESCRIPTION:School can be a confusing\, frightening\, and overwhelming place for many children. For Kinship children\, it can be even more intimidating.  Relating to other children\, making relationships\, being academic successful\, can be difficult for many kinship children.  Do I tell them I’m living with my grandma? What if they ask where my mom and dad are?  I don’t have the same type of clothes the other kids have-what if they make fun of me? What if I need help? Who can I trust for help? Whether they say it or not\, these are just some of the questions kids have when heading off to school. \nJoin us on August 22 as we learn about the Family Resource and Youth Service Center (FRYSC) and the help they can provide children and their families.  Many don’t realize the wide range of supports that FRYSC agents provide to families and how they can support children. FRYSC agents can make all the difference in helping a child be successful. Learn how they can help your family! \nAbout the Trainer: \nMelissa Goins serves as the Division Director for Kentucky’s Family Resource and Youth Services Centers (FRYSC) located in most Kentucky Schools.  Funded through the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services\, the primary goal of these centers is to remove nonacademic barriers to learning as a means to enhance student academic success. \nMs. Goins began her career working in the juvenile court system as a front-line worker\, trainer\, and field supervisor for a statewide diversion program. Prior to her position as Director of FRYSC she served as the Family Services Manager for the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts where she oversaw the state’s Court Improvement Project and worked collaboratively with Kentucky’s child protection agency to improve outcomes and permanency for kids in care. \nMs. Goins is a member of the State Interagency Council\, The Kentucky Board of Education Health Subcommittee\, and the Kentucky Partnership for Families and Children Board of Directors.  Ms. Goins received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Communications from Georgetown College and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky. \nPlease note: Although this LIVE webinar is designed to be an informative\, educational\, and helpful resource for kinship families caring for relative or fictive kin children\, anyone is welcome to attend including foster parents\, professionals\, students\, or community members. \nIt is our hope that by participating in this LIVE webinar\, attendees will receive educational and helpful information. DESCRIPTION:CORE TEEN (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) \nSession 2 \nParenting Youth Who Have Experienced Trauma \nJAugust 23\, 2023 \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm EST \nVia Zoom \nStephanie Spires \n2 credit hours \nNavigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. The University of Kentucky Training Resource Centers\, in collaboration with DCBS\, will offer training to equip foster and adoptive parents to meet the needs of older youth who have moderate to serious emotional and behavioral health challenges. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #2\, piloted by the Foster Parent Training Program at the UK College of Social Work\, parents will further explore how trauma affects a youth’s behaviors. \nThe experience of trauma often produces behaviors that often seem out of context and usually include anger\, mistrust\, or defiance. The experience of trauma can also impact school performance\, relationships\, and can result in delays in social skills and development. During this session\, participants will explore how the interactions and interventions used with youth who have experienced trauma are different than those used with youth who have not experienced trauma. Participants will: \n· Understand what traumatic events are and how they affect youth physically\, emotionally\, and psychologically. \n· Recognize emotions and behaviors in your child that are associated to a traumatic event. \n· Learn how triggers work and how to respond effectively to a traumatic response \n· Gain usable knowledge on how to parent traumatized youth and promote successful behaviors. \nAdaptive responses are those behaviors that a child or youth might develop in order to protect themselves when they feel unsafe. SUMMARY:Transracial Parenting: Ages 12-18
DESCRIPTION:Transracial Parenting: Ages 12-18 explores the unique experiences of transracial foster/adoptive families and examines developmental stages of racial identity development in youth ages twelve to eighteen. The training provides strategies on how to handle situations brought about by racism and views within society on transracial families.\nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss racial and self-identity development in youth ages 12-18 years old.\nUtilize strategies to discuss racism with maturing children.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. DESCRIPTION:Positive Discipline for Teenagers will provide foster/Adoptive Parents with effective tools that will guide them to positive discipline and communication with teenagers that are in their care/home. It discusses the importance of using partnership based approach to discipline. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the three main styles of discipline and the importance of daily positive reinforcement and feedback when disciplining teenagers.\nDescribe how and when to compromise when setting rules and consequences for teens\, the importance of setting logical and appropriate consequences and when to enforce them.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. DESCRIPTION:New Placements: Preparing & Adjusting Family Roles will help foster and adoptive parents introduce new placements into their existing family units. It gives ideas and strategies on how to prepare children and family already in the home to best welcome a new foster or adoptive child. It also describes challenges children already in the home (biological\, foster\, adoptive\, step\, etc.) may be confronted with when a new child is introduced into the nuclear family. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nPrepare their family to welcome a new foster or adoptive placement into their existing family structure.\nUtilize strategies to address and overcome perceived challenges felt by children already in their home as well as new placements to make the transition smoother.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting.
