DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. The University of Kentucky Training Resource Centers\, in collaboration with DCBS\, will offer training to equip foster and adoptive parents to meet the needs of older youth who have moderate to serious emotional and behavioral health challenges. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #3\, piloted by the Foster Parent Training Program at the UK College of Social Work\, parents will further explore how ambiguous loss is a feeling of grief or distress combined with confusion about the lost person or relationship. \nWith ambiguous loss\, there is no verification of death or certainty that the person will come back or return to the way they used to be. Ambiguous loss is a loss that occurs without a significant likelihood of reaching emotional closure or a clear understanding. There are two types of ambiguous loss: \n\nWhen a person is physically present but psychologically unavailable.\nWhen a person is physically absent but psychologically present.\n(This type most commonly occurs in foster care and adoption.)\n\nFoster and adoptive youth feel ambiguous loss when they are removed from their homes\, change schools\, and have multiple placements. Each incident requires them to lose a friend\, a connection\, and a sense of familiarity and trust. Dealing with ambiguous loss can create grief\, confusion\, fear\, and uncertainty in foster youth. As a result\, foster/adoptive youth who have experienced trauma may struggle with building relationships and behavioral issues. To help children better manage these repeated traumas\, foster and adoptive parents\, must be sensitive to the role ambiguous loss plays in foster and adopted children’s behavior. During this session caregivers will: \n\nDetermine the impact of loss and grief on teens.\nLearn how to increase attachment and strengthen their relationship with youth.\nLearn how to deepen their connection with their youth or the youth they will parent.\n\nThis session will help to mitigate the trauma associated with ambiguous loss and grief. DESCRIPTION:This training will take place via virtual live Zoom meeting. Participants will be required to have a laptop or tablet with reliable internet connection to participate in the live\, interactive training. Participants will be asked to utilize camera and microphone capabilities\, and will be asked to participate using chat features\, Q&A and polls. \nThis is the initial training that all foster parents must complete before they can be approved as a Medically Complex home. This training is for DCBS and PCP foster parents and workers. \nAll participants must be registered in TRIS. \nPrior to attending this training\, participants must complete a series of web-based trainings. These trainings are: Medically Complex: Orientation\, Medically Complex: Standards of Practice\, Medically Complex: Growth and Development\, and Medically Complex: Nutrition. \nPrerequisite Information:\nMUST be completed no later than the date listed in the description. There are four (4) web-based trainings that serve as prerequisites to the initial medically complex training\, Join Hands Together. These include Medically Complex Orientation (2.25 hours)\, DCBS Standards of Practice for Medically Complex Homes (1 hour)\, Growth and Development (1 hour) and Nutrition (1 hour). These are required for all foster parents before they attend the in-person or virtual Join Hands Together training\, which provides the remaining 6.75 hours of initial Medically Complex training credit. \nSpecial Information:\nUpon completion of prerequisite trainings\, a link to the Zoom registration form will be sent to participants. Please complete the Zoom registration form as soon as possible. Once the Zoom registration form is completed\, participants will automatically receive a URL link to the virtual Zoom meeting. SUMMARY:ARC Meetings & IEPs: The Basics
DESCRIPTION:ARC Meetings & IEPs: The Basics will help foster and adoptive parents understand the process of an ARC Meeting and gain a better perspective of what an IEP will look like. It offers strategies and ideas to help parents be prepared the ARC meetings. This training also offers sample IEP goals and objectives to give foster and adoptive parents some deeper understanding of what these will look like when an IEP is written for the child in their home. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nPrepare for and participate in ARC meetings\nUnderstand IEP goals and objectives to collaborate with school personnel in writing a child’s IEP\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. SUMMARY:Kinship Live Virtual Webinar Training- “Education Series: Bullying And Other Harmful Situations-What Do I Do To Protect My Child?”
DESCRIPTION:As kinship children head out the door for a new school year\, caregivers send them out with all the resources and materials they need for a successful year. Unfortunately\, in addition to the schoolwork\, many children must learn to navigate challenging issues at school involving interactions with other students. These confrontations and negative interactions can have a profound effect on children\, often coloring their perception of themselves and their families\, and ultimately affecting their overall mental health. For kinship children\, these situations can have an even more significant effect if they have been exposed to previous trauma. Be sure to join us for this important webinar and learn how we can support our children who experience issues related to bullying and other harmful situations at school. Through this session\, we will learn how we can help our children to be successful in the new school year! \nREGISTER NOW \nAbout the Trainer: Blake Konny is a Safe Schools Consultant at the Kentucky Department of Education. His work includes bullying prevention\, suicide prevention\, and other areas focused on supporting schools to provide for students’ social and emotional needs. Blake is a former high school teacher and has over ten years of experience as a secondary school administrator. He is passionate about ensuring that every member of a school community has the resources and support needed to be successful. Blake is a certified trainer for Olweus Bullying Prevention\, Sources of Strength and Youth Mental Health First Aid. \nPlease note: Although this LIVE webinar is designed to be an informative\, educational\, and helpful resource for kinship families caring for relative or fictive kin children\, anyone is welcome to attend including foster parents\, professionals\, students\, or community members. \nIt is our hope that by participating in this LIVE webinar\, attendees will receive educational and helpful information. DESCRIPTION:Developmental Stages & Children’s Responses to Grief defines grief and explores how children process and express grief at different developmental stages. SUMMARY:Kinship Families Impacted By Substance Use KIN VIP Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child.
