DESCRIPTION:Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) come in many forms\, from physical and mental abuse to neglect and household dysfunction. This training examines data from the ACE study\, how early adversity as a child can impact adult physical\, social and emotional health as well as what foster and adoptive parents can do to address trauma and create safe environments and relationships with children in out of home care. SUMMARY:Kinship Families Impacted By Substance Use KIN VIP Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. DESCRIPTION:CORE TEEN (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) \nSession 7 \nA New Suitcase of Parenting Knowledge and Skills  \nNovember 8\, 2023 \n10:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST \nVia Zoom \nCarla Jordan\, MS \n2 credit hours \nNavigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. The University of Kentucky in collaboration with DCBS\, will offer training to equip foster and adoptive parents to meet the needs of older youth who have moderate to serious emotional and behavioral health challenges. \nSession 7 wraps up the CORE Teen Training Program. During this final session parents will continue to add to their “trauma- informed parenting suitcase.” Participants will: \n\nCreate healthy relationships with birth family members and other key individuals\nReview the impact of trauma and trauma informed parenting\nDefine secondary traumatic stress\nIdentify strategies for dealing with secondary traumatic stress\n\nThis session will teach parents how to nurture and promote the well-being of their youth through trauma-informed parenting. DESCRIPTION:One of our most basic needs is housing\, but finding affordable housing for your family can be challenging.  With costs rising and housing being harder to find\, it helps to have all the information so that you can navigate this well. For those who are experiencing homelessness\, this can be a very frightening time!  Even if you\, or someone you know\, are already utilizing Public Housing or Section 8 housing\, knowing your rights can be difficult as well. \nJoin us on November 9\, 2023 from 12 pm – 1:30 pm as we explore the ins and outs of HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development)\, Public Housing\, and Section 8 housing. We’ll explore what is required to receive housing\, the application process\, how to locate housing\, your rights as a tenant\, and resources available to those experiencing homelessness through the Housing Department. \nREGISTER NOW \nAbout the Trainers: \nLindsay Anderson is the Continuum of Care Systems Specialist under the Housing Contract Administration. SUMMARY:Guiding Your Child Through Adolescence 
DESCRIPTION:Guiding Your Child Through Adolescence explores the physical and emotional changes that children undergo as they enter adolescence. Parents will discuss how parental roles change during this period of their child’s development. Strategies for successfully communicating with children during adolescence are provided. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify physical and emotional changes that children experience as they enter adolescence.\nDiscuss how parental roles and communication strategies change during a child’s adolescence.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. SUMMARY:Medically Complex Join Hands Together Virtual Training
DESCRIPTION:This training will take place via virtual live Zoom meeting. Participants will be required to have a laptop or tablet with reliable internet connection to participate in the live\, interactive training. Participants will be asked to utilize camera and microphone capabilities\, and will be asked to participate using chat features\, Q&A and polls. \nThis is the initial training that all foster parents must complete before they can be approved as a Medically Complex home. This training is for DCBS and PCP foster parents and workers. \nAll participants must be registered in TRIS. \nPrior to attending this training\, participants must complete a series of web-based trainings. These trainings are: Medically Complex: Orientation\, Medically Complex: Standards of Practice\, Medically Complex: Growth and Development\, and Medically Complex: Nutrition. \nPrerequisite Information:\nMUST be completed no later than the date listed in the description. There are four (4) web-based trainings that serve as prerequisites to the initial medically complex training\, Join Hands Together. These include Medically Complex Orientation (2.25 hours)\, DCBS Standards of Practice for Medically Complex Homes (1 hour)\, Growth and Development (1 hour) and Nutrition (1 hour). These are required for all foster parents before they attend the in-person or virtual Join Hands Together training\, which provides the remaining 6.75 hours of initial Medically Complex training credit. \nSpecial Information:\nUpon completion of prerequisite trainings\, a link to the Zoom registration form will be sent to participants. Please complete the Zoom registration form as soon as possible. Once the Zoom registration form is completed\, participants will automatically receive a URL link to the virtual Zoom meeting. Each participant will be required to use their personal email addresses when registering for the training. If a couple wishes to attend the same training sessions using the same computer\, both participants names will need to be listed on the Zoom registration form in order for each person to receive training credit. \nYour full attention is required during the training. Please do not participate in additional activities\, meetings or work during the designated training times.

DESCRIPTION:Drugs: Things You Need to Know is designed to inform parents of the many different classifications of illicit drugs\, as well as the current trends related to adolescent drug abuse. Detailed descriptions of commonly abused drugs are provided\, including the appearance of these drugs and the effects they produce in users. The importance of identifying drug abuse and seeking early assessment and treatment is explored. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify trends\, types\, usage\, and the effects of common illegal drugs.\nDiscuss recovery options to pursue if a child or youth is abusing drugs.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting.
