DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. The repetitive\, negative aspect of rumination can contribute to the development of depression or anxiety and can worsen existing mental health and other behavioral conditions. Focusing on negative thoughts can impede progress\, interfere in relationships and negatively impact an individual’s health and wellness. \nDuring this training\, foster parents will learn practical steps to increase their mental real-estate and improve their cognitive abilities and critical thinking skills. More specifically\, this training will help parents learn strategies that can be modeled to their foster youth to increase resiliency. SUMMARY:Kinship Live Virtual Webinar Training- “Trauma Series: What Is Trauma And How Can It Affect My Kinship Child?”
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Trauma and how it affects children\, can be very difficult.  Because trauma can be experienced in a uniquely personal way\, a child’s reaction to the trauma can also be just as unique.  In addition to understanding trauma\, it is important to recognize children who have experienced trauma such as abuse\, neglect\, domestic violence\, community violence\, and the like\, can continue to experience the effects of this trauma long after they have been removed from the situation or the source. Knowing and understanding what Trauma is and how it can affect the children we care for is especially important in all areas of raising the child from structure to discipline\, to support and empathy\, that remains sensitive to the child’s past experiences. \nJoin us on May 9\, from 5:30 pm – 7 pm where we will gain a better understanding of what trauma is\, how it affects our children\, and how caregivers can support these children as they work through the trauma. \nAbout the Trainer: \nDr. Tess Smith-Thomas is a pediatric psychology post-doctoral scholar at the University of Kentucky and Kentucky Children’s Hospital. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Kentucky\, where she gained extensive experience supporting children with behavioral challenges. Currently\, Dr. Smith-Thomas provides clinical care to children and families experiencing medical trauma or other difficulty adjusting to an injury or illness. \nPlease note: Although this LIVE webinar is designed to be an informative\, educational\, and helpful resource for kinship families caring for relative or fictive kin children\, anyone is welcome to attend including foster parents\, professionals\, students\, or community members. \nIt is our hope that by participating in this LIVE webinar\, attendees will receive educational and helpful information. DESCRIPTION:Cyberbullying is a training that explores what cyberbullying entails\, warning signs that a child may be a victim of it\, and its harmful effects. Statistics on cyberbullying are examined and reasons for cyberbullying behavior in children and youth are discussed. Strategies designed to protect children and youth from becoming a victim of cyberbullying are provided. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the signs of a child\, teen or young adult being cyberbullied or engaging in cyberbullying behavior.\nArticulate appropriate steps if a parent suspects a child or youth in their home is being cyberbullied or exhibiting cyberbullying behavior.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. SUMMARY:Kinship Families Impacted By Substance Use KIN VIP Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child.
