DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. DESCRIPTION:CORE TEEN (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) \nSession 1 \nIntroduction and Understanding the Impact of Trauma on Youth in Foster Care \nAugust 9\, 2023 \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm EST \nVia Zoom \nCarla Jordan\, MS \n2 credit hours \nNavigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. Parents that are not trauma-informed may have the best intentions. However\, having to encounter disruptive behaviors and other trauma responses may overshadow even the best of intentions. These encounters can create conflict in the parent/child relationship and ultimately can cause more harm than good for all involved. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #1\, piloted by the Foster Parent Training Program at the UK College of Social Work\, parents will learn to nurture and promote the well-being of their youth through trauma-informed parenting. More specifically\, parents will: \n\nDefine trauma\nDescribe ways that traumatic stress and adversity impact a youth’s development\nDescribe the importance of responding to the underlying cause of a youth’s behaviors\n\nThis session will help caregivers understand how trauma has impacted the cognitive and emotional development of youth and how youth may respond to those who are in the parental role. SUMMARY:Promoting Stability & Increasing Resiliency For Children In Care
DESCRIPTION:Promoting Stability & Increasing Resiliency for Children in Care explores the concepts of stability and resiliency and introduces skills for building resiliency in children who have experienced trauma. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the differences between stability and resiliency and what it means to children in care.\nDescribe ways to build resiliency in children who have experienced trauma.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. DESCRIPTION:ASK-VIP LGBTQ+ Foster/Adoptive Parent Support Groups are specifically designed for foster/adoptive parents who identify as LGBTQ+ as well as foster/adoptive parents who are caring for children or teens who identify as LGBTQ+. The groups offer an opportunity to share experiences\, questions\, resources\, and concerns in a safe and compassionate environment. These groups are led by a seasoned foster/adoptive parent facilitator who understands firsthand issues unique to the LGBTQ+ community. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this support group. SUMMARY:Kinship Families Impacted By Substance Use KIN VIP Support Group
DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. Once we reach at least 8-10 members\, we will start the group! \nFor all those who attend at least 10 of the 12 sessions and complete a survey review of the group\, a financial incentive is available! \nContact Sheila Rentfrow at sheila.rentfrow@uky.edu for more information or sign up to secure your spot! \nREGISTER NOW
