DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. SUMMARY:Medically Complex Join Hands Together Virtual Training
DESCRIPTION:This training will take place via virtual live Zoom meeting. Participants will be required to have a laptop or tablet with reliable internet connection to participate in the live\, interactive training. Participants will be asked to utilize camera and microphone capabilities\, and will be asked to participate using chat features\, Q&A and polls. \nThis is the initial training that all foster parents must complete before they can be approved as a Medically Complex home. This training is for DCBS and PCP foster parents and workers. \nAll participants must be registered in TRIS. \nPrior to attending this training\, participants must complete a series of web-based trainings. These trainings are: Medically Complex: Orientation\, Medically Complex: Standards of Practice\, Medically Complex: Growth and Development\, and Medically Complex: Nutrition. \nPrerequisite Information:\nMUST be completed no later than the date listed in the description. There are four (4) web-based trainings that serve as prerequisites to the initial medically complex training\, Join Hands Together. These include Medically Complex Orientation (2.25 hours)\, DCBS Standards of Practice for Medically Complex Homes (1 hour)\, Growth and Development (1 hour) and Nutrition (1 hour). These are required for all foster parents before they attend the in-person or virtual Join Hands Together training\, which provides the remaining 6.75 hours of initial Medically Complex training credit. \nSpecial Information:\nUpon completion of prerequisite trainings\, a link to the Zoom registration form will be sent to participants. Please complete the Zoom registration form as soon as possible. Once the Zoom registration form is completed\, participants will automatically receive a URL link to the virtual Zoom meeting. Each participant will be required to use their personal email addresses when registering for the training. If a couple wishes to attend the same training sessions using the same computer\, both participants names will need to be listed on the Zoom registration form in order for each person to receive training credit. \nYour full attention is required during the training. DESCRIPTION:Foster Parent Safe Zone Training \nDecember 7\, 2023\n \n10:00 AM-12:00 PM EST \nVia Zoom \nRegistration Deadline: 12/5/23 at 11:59 PM \nCarla Jordan\, MS \n2 credit hours \nBecoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present its own unique challenges\, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma. LGBTQ+ youth enter the foster care system for many of the same reasons as non-LGBTQ+ youth in care\, such as abuse\, neglect\, and parental substance abuse. Many LGBTQ+ youth have the added layer of trauma that comes with being rejected or mistreated because of their sexual orientation\, gender identity or gender expression. According to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation\, 2022: \n\nApproximately 1 out of every 3 youth in foster care is LGBTQ+\nLGBTQ+ youth report higher rates of mistreatment while in care\nLGBTQ+ youth report more frequent placement disruptions and are less likely to be placed in family settings.\n\nLGBTQ+ youth in out-of-home care face additional challenges such as discrimination\, stigma and bullying. LGBTQ+ children/youth feel unsafe and face rejection from their families\, schools and community. The Foster Parent Training Program\, housed at the UK College of Social Work Training Resource Center\, is offering training that would equip foster parents to support LGBTQ+ youth in foster care. \nThis training will help foster parents create safe environments for their foster youth to feel safe and affirmed. This workshop is designed to provide an introduction LGBTQ+ and allyship Training. Parents will learn: \n\nAbout foundational LGBTQ+ vocabulary.\nParticipants will develop a clearer understanding of the importance of language in relation to creating affirming environments LGBTQ+ individuals.\nParticipants will learn to understand the difference between gender and sexuality.\nParticipants will be able to describe the difference between biological sex\, gender identity\, gender expression\, and attraction.\nParticipants will know at least one reason it is helpful and important to recognize these different components within gender.\nParticipants will learn what it means to “come out” and the privileges or lack of privileges associated with coming out.\nParticipants will be able to separate myth from fact\, and accurate information from hearsay\, regarding popular misconceptions about LGBTQ+ people.\n\nThis training is approved for 2 credit hours for ongoing\, elective training credit for Kentucky foster parents. Though the training is delivered virtually\, it fulfills the face-to-face\, group-setting requirement. DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. SUMMARY:Grief & Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:This course offers an exploration of the distinctive and complex grieving experience inherent in foster care and adoption\, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and emotions associated with this unique journey. The training will equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the intricacies of the foster care system\, particularly focusing on the grieving process inherent in this environment. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the unique grieving experience associated with foster care. \nBy exploring the multifaceted layers of grief experienced by both foster children and caregivers\, this course will shed light on the emotional complexities and dynamics surrounding loss within the foster care context. \nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. DESCRIPTION:Learning to Communicate: Developing Social Skills will equip parents to understand the process of communicating with children\, teaching children to communicate with adults and peers\, and developing interpersonal social skills. It offers strategies and ideas to help parents and children communicate with each other more effectively and offers strategies to help children in care specifically. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nUtilize strategies to assist children in developing effective communication skills and communicate with their children more effectively.\nArticulate types of social skills and assist children in developing these skills.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. DESCRIPTION:ASK-VIP Support Group for Foster/Adoptive Parents Caring for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children provides a welcoming\, safe environment for foster and adoptive parents to share resources\, concerns\, ask questions\, and connect with others who have a similar family dynamic. \nThe support group is facilitated by Christina Delk. Delk has worked for 23 years as a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH). She is also a mother of seven and three of her children are deaf\, with one being Deaf+. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this support group.
