SUMMARY:Connecting With Your Child While Correcting Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Connecting with Your Child While Correcting Behavior introduces parents to strategies to use to help them feel connected to children while correcting difficult behaviors. Parents will learn how to connect while also understanding the child’s history and also empowering them in the process. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nParticipants will learn the 3Ds by focusing their correction on behaviors with the goal being compliance. ​\nParticipants will understand the 3 c’s and how to achieve those by connecting while correcting. ​\nParticipants will understand the four levels of response and strategies for correcting behaviors. ​\nParticipants will understand how the child’s history impacts themselves and the child.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. DESCRIPTION:First Steps: Kentucky’s Early Intervention System explores the services provided by this program. Participants learn how to refer children ages zero to three who have developmental delays\, or medical conditions known to cause developmental delays\, for First Steps services. How to work with the program to create an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) is explored. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nArticulate how to refer children ages 0-3 years old who have developmental delays or medical conditions known to cause developmental delays to First Steps for evaluation.\nDiscuss services provided and how to work with the KEIS team to create and follow an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) for children zero through three years old.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. SUMMARY:Introduction And Understanding The Impact Of Trauma On Youth In Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:Navigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. Parents that are not trauma-informed may have the best intentions. However\, having to encounter disruptive behaviors and other trauma responses may overshadow even the best of intentions. These encounters can create conflict in the parent/child relationship and ultimately can cause more harm than good for all involved. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #1\, parents will learn to nurture and promote the well-being of their youth through trauma-informed parenting. More specifically\, parents will: \n\nDefine trauma\nDescribe ways that traumatic stress and adversity impact a youth’s development\nDescribe the importance of responding to the underlying cause of a youth’s behaviors\n\nREGISTER NOW \nThis session will help caregivers understand how trauma has impacted the cognitive and emotional development of youth and how youth may respond to those who are in the parental role. DESCRIPTION:CORE TEEN (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) \nSession 2\n \nParenting Youth Who Have Experienced Trauma\n \nFebruary 15th\, 2024 \n6:30 PM-8:30 PM EST \nVia Zoom \nJoy Harris Edwards \n2 credit hours \nNavigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. The University of Kentucky Training Resource Centers\, in collaboration with DCBS\, will offer training to equip foster and adoptive parents to meet the needs of older youth who have moderate to serious emotional and behavioral health challenges. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #2\, piloted by the Foster Parent Training Program at the UK College of Social Work\, parents will further explore how trauma affects a youth’s behaviors. \nThe experience of trauma often produces behaviors that often seem out of context and usually include anger\, mistrust\, or defiance. The experience of trauma can also impact school performance\, relationships\, and can result in delays in social skills and development. During this session\, participants will explore how the interactions and interventions used with youth who have experienced trauma are different than those used with youth who have not experienced trauma. Participants will: \n· Understand what traumatic events are and how they affect youth physically\, emotionally\, and psychologically. \n· Recognize emotions and behaviors in your child that are associated to a traumatic event. \n· Learn how triggers work and how to respond effectively to a traumatic response \n· Gain usable knowledge on how to parent traumatized youth and promote successful behaviors. \nAdaptive responses are those behaviors that a child or youth might develop in order to protect themselves when they feel unsafe.
