SUMMARY:Understanding the Brain and Fear Responses in Traumatized Children
DESCRIPTION:Understanding the Brain and Fear Responses in Traumatized Children provides an overview of brain development and how fight/flight/freeze fear responses may manifest in children who have experienced trauma. In addition\, strategies for caregivers to manage fear based behavior is discussed. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nArticulate the basics of brain development and function in children\, how trauma affects development\, and how fear impacts behavior.\nUtilize strategies to de-escalate and manage fear responses in children in age appropriate ways.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. SUMMARY:Green Dot Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Green Dot is a bystander intervention program designed to reduce instances of interpersonal violence through proactive and reactive strategies. The program empowers members of the UK community to intervene safely and effectively in potentially harmful situations. This workshop will be facilitated by Fadyia Lowe and tailored specifically to College of Social Work students. \nFadyia Lowe graduated from the University of KY College of Communication and Information in 2004 with a BA in Corporate Communication. She completed her Masters degree in 2006 in Health Promotion from UK College of Education. She began working at University Health Service in June of 2006 as one of the first and only Health Education Specialist on UKs campus. She was tasked with developing a comprehensive evidenced based health education and wellness department. She became a certified health education specialist in 2007 and a certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist In 2008 and helped to launch UKs Tobacco-Free Campus by providing counseling and nicotine replacement therapy for students interested in quitting tobacco. In 2015 she was promoted to the UHS Health Education and Wellness Manager where she oversees a growing team comprised of health education specialists\, health and wellness coaches\, a registered dietitian and several student peer health educators. \nYou can attend the workshop here on Zoom. \nIf you have questions\, contact Kayla Powell at kayla.powell@uky.edu.

DESCRIPTION:Transracial Parenting: Ages 5-12 explores the unique experiences of transracial families and examines developmental stages of racial identity development in elementary and middle school-aged children. It offers strategies to create an environment that is conducive to the formation of a positive identity\, as well as strategies to help children develop coping skills and methods of maintaining a positive identity. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nExamine children’s racial identity development (ages five to twelve years old).\nArticulate positive self-esteem and coping strategies for transracially-placed children.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. DESCRIPTION:A Child’s Education: Rights & Responsibilities will inform parents of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The training informs foster and adoptive parents of the processes used to determine eligibility requirements for children with disabilities. In addition\, this training will equip participants to ensure children ages three to twenty-one have access to the tools and services necessary to help them succeed in the least restrictive educational environment. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nRecognize the 13 types of disabilities covered under IDEA\nUtilize knowledge of tools and services to understand their rights and participate in ARC meetings\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents.
