DESCRIPTION:This new KIN VIP Support Group will begin as a 12-week pilot Support Group and will provide a community of support for kinship caregivers who have been impacted by a family member’s substance use. This group will offer a safe space where kinship caregivers can find support\, understanding\, resources\, and hope. \nThe group is completely free and available to any caregiver raising a relative or fictive kin child. DESCRIPTION:CORE TEEN (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) \nSession 1 \nIntroduction and Understanding the Impact of Trauma on Youth in Foster Care \nAugust 9\, 2023 \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm EST \nVia Zoom \nCarla Jordan\, MS \n2 credit hours \nNavigating the teen years can be challenging. It is even more difficult for youth that have experienced trauma. Parents that are not trauma-informed may have the best intentions. However\, having to encounter disruptive behaviors and other trauma responses may overshadow even the best of intentions. These encounters can create conflict in the parent/child relationship and ultimately can cause more harm than good for all involved. \nDuring this CORE (Critical On-going Resource Family Education) Teen Training session #1\, piloted by the Foster Parent Training Program at the UK College of Social Work\, parents will learn to nurture and promote the well-being of their youth through trauma-informed parenting. More specifically\, parents will: \n\nDefine trauma\nDescribe ways that traumatic stress and adversity impact a youth’s development\nDescribe the importance of responding to the underlying cause of a youth’s behaviors\n\nThis session will help caregivers understand how trauma has impacted the cognitive and emotional development of youth and how youth may respond to those who are in the parental role. SUMMARY:Financial Planning For Children With Special Needs
DESCRIPTION:Financial Planning for Children with Special Needs helps families caring for children with special needs proactively plan for their child’s future without jeopardizing entitlement benefits. It provides practical tools to make decisions that fit a family’s specific needs and goals. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the importance of utilizing a person-centered financial planning process to best ensure that a child with special needs is well cared for long-term\nIdentify and apply financial planning goals and related resources for their family\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. There is 1.5 hours of ongoing\, elective foster parent training credit available for Kentucky’s foster parents. \nCreate an account or log-in to register for this training. A reliable internet connection and a smartphone\, tablet\, or computer with web camera is needed to participate. If there are two adults in the same household that want to participate in this training\, each person must register separately. Foster parent training credit is administered based on the duration of the meeting and each attendee’s participation. SUMMARY:Cyberbullying
DESCRIPTION:Cyberbullying is a training that explores what cyberbullying entails\, warning signs that a child may be a victim of it\, and its harmful effects. Statistics on cyberbullying are examined and reasons for cyberbullying behavior in children and youth are discussed. Strategies designed to protect children and youth from becoming a victim of cyberbullying are provided. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the signs of a child\, teen or young adult being cyberbullied or engaging in cyberbullying behavior.\nArticulate appropriate steps if a parent suspects a child or youth in their home is being cyberbullied or exhibiting cyberbullying behavior.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. DESCRIPTION:Services & Support for Foster & Adoptive Families will inform parents about resources available to individuals with intellectual disabilities through the Michelle P. Waiver Program\, which allows eligible individuals to remain in their homes with services and supports. In addition\, participants will learn about SSI\, finding biological parents\, and the importance of planning for independent living for foster youth. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe the Michelle P. Waiver Program and Social Security (SSI) benefits.\nUtilize available resources and independent living services offered through the Cabinet for Health and Family Services for youth aging out of care.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting. DESCRIPTION:Helping Foster & Adopted Children Transition to a New School will assist foster/adoptive parents in preparing to enroll a child in a new school. It will also provide practical tips for helping their children explain adoption to their classmates in a way that is comfortable to them and gives suggestions regarding answers to common adoption questions that children may ask. \nAfter completing this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand logistical tasks (such as healthcare\, enrollment paperwork\, and IEP’s) that must be addressed before a child can attend a new school.\nExplain adoption to their child in a way that the child can relay it to their classmates and peers.\n\nASK-VIP trainings are expressly designed to meet the needs of foster and adoptive parents. Skilled trainers who have lived experiences with fostering and adoption provide these trainings in a virtual group setting.
