Current Projects

  • From Resilience to Resistance: The Detox – Co-presenter at the National Association of Black Social Workers in March 2022. This research is intended to address the stereotypes that exist with the strong Black woman (SBW) archetype and the lived experiences of operating in a space from resilience to resistance.
  • Double Jeopardy: Psychological Health of Black Women in Higher Education – Presenting at the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education conference in March 2022. This presentation uses critical race theory, Black feminist perspective, and strong Black women schema to explain how the intersection of race and gender complicates the lived experiences of Black women in academia, thereby leading to sustained psychological stress.

Get to Know Dr. Slay

Dr. Slay has over a decade of professional experience in youth development, social welfare policy issues, and non-profit management. In 2019, she was selected as a United States of Women Ambassador. In this volunteer role, she worked with community agencies and organizations toward voter equity and engagement for women and provided education and awareness on overall disparity issues for Black women. As a former student of ballet, tap, lyrical, and jazz, she continues her passion for dance through barre and Pilates classes in her spare time.
