Get to Know Heather
Dr. Heather McCauley is a social epidemiologist and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Social Work at University of Kentucky. Her community-partnered research focuses on the social and structural determinants of violence to inform prevention and intervention.
Dr. McCauley has been the principal investigator on grants funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Homeland Security. She has authored or co-authored almost 100 journal articles and book chapters in outlets spanning a variety of health and social science disciplines. She currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Family Violence and is a regular grant reviewer for the CDC, NIH, and the National Institute of Justice.
To broaden the reach of her work, Dr. McCauley leverages creative dissemination strategies such as filmmaking and podcasting. She was an Executive Producer and the host of the Emmy nominated documentary, “Sparking Communities for Change: Michigan,” and the documentary “Sparking Hope: The Power of Improv,” both produced by Detroit PBS. Her grant funding also supported the production of the limited podcast series, The Loop, by Ear Hustle (PRX/Radiotopia), that highlights the stories of youth in New York City who are caught in the loop of systems involvement.
Dr. McCauley earned her ScD in Social Epidemiology and MS in Global Health from Harvard University. She earned her BA in Sociology from St. Lawrence University, where she has served on the Board of Trustees since 2013.
