LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 1, 2026) — For University of Kentucky College of Social Work students, one conversation with an experienced alum can help shape a practicum search, strengthen a résumé or open the door to a new professional connection.
Applications are now open for the College of Social Work Alumni Association’s Alumni-Student Mentoring Program, which will connect current students with CoSW alumni for one-on-one mentoring during the Spring 2027 semester.
Entering its fifth year, the program is designed to help students build professional confidence, expand their networks, and receive individualized guidance from alumni who understand the opportunities and challenges that come with preparing for a career in social work and related fields.
The program will run from January through May 2027. Mentors and mentees will receive resources to help guide their participation while maintaining the flexibility to shape the experience around each student’s goals, interests, and professional aspirations.
For previous participants, those relationships have led to tangible professional opportunities.
“My mentor assisted with tailoring my resume in preparation for my foundation practicum,” one former student mentee said. “With her help, I was able to secure a practicum position with an agency whose mission aligns with my career goals. My mentor also connected me with one of her colleagues for an informational interview. With her help, I was able to make a professional connection and expand my networking skills.”
The experience can be equally meaningful for alumni who volunteer as mentors.
“I loved my mentee,” one former alumni mentor said. “I can’t wait to keep in touch with her and see how she progresses in her career.”
Participation is free and open to students enrolled in a College of Social Work degree program. CoSW alumni are also encouraged to apply as mentors and share their professional experience, perspective and support with the next generation of students.
Applications for both student mentees and alumni mentors are open through Nov. 1.
