The Person Behind the Performance: A Sport Social Work Perspective
Event Overview
This session will provide an overview of sport social work as a subspecialty of social work and explore the unique experiences of athletes, families, and the systems surrounding them. Using a high-performance lens, presenters will examine what can happen when performance becomes connected to identity, worth, belonging, and expectations. This session will draw on practice experiences and research to show how social work values are applied within sport to support athletes, their experiences, and the systems.
Objectives:
- Describe sport social work and its relevance across social work practice settings.
- Identify factors that influence athlete well-being, including identity, performance expectations, relationships, belonging, burnout, and environmental or systemic pressures.
- Explore the whole person behind performance and how social work’s person-in-environment perspective can inform support for athletes, families, and communities.
