LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky College of Social Work (CoSW) is celebrating National Social Work Month with events all month long. On March 6, the CoSW came together with its alumni to support the UK Men’s Basketball team in the final home game of the season.
The Social Work Alumni Association (SWAA) provided alumni a number of complimentary tickets, with 32 CoSW alumni coming together to watch a Wildcat victory as UK defeated Vanderbilt, 93-77.
Dr. William Taylor, a 2023 graduate from the Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) program was in attendance and enjoyed his time meeting and connecting with fellow CoSW alums.
“This event is a great way to support the College, meet new people and stay connected to other alumni,” Taylor said. “My time with the College of Social Work meant a lot to me. I had always wanted to work towards my doctorate and the online DSW program gave me the opportunity to continue to work full-time and further pursue my education, as well as build new connections and relationships.”
Jaime Wainscott, CoSW Academic Advising Director and graduate from the Bachelor of Arts in Social Work program, attended the game as a current staff member and as an alum of the College.
“Having the opportunity to attend the basketball game, as well as connect with other alums with shared experiences was a great opportunity from the SWAA,” Wainscott said. “Working with students as the advising director, it’s awesome to see their hard work pay off and celebrated at an event like this.”
In honor of National Social Work Month, the CoSW also kicked off its campaign “Social Work is Everywhere,” aiming to elevate the visibility of social work, showcasing how social workers play a crucial role in creating support and change in society.
“Over the last few years, the College of Social Work has made great strides. Enrollment has grown, retention and graduation metrics are at record highs, and our faculty continue to excel in instructional and research spaces,” Dr. Justin “Jay” Miller, Dean and Dorothy A. Miller Research Professor in Social Work Education of CoSW, said. “Without question, this work would not be possible without the partnership and support of our alumni.”
The CoSW will continue to celebrate National Social Work during the month of March, hosting a multitude of events and highlighting the impactful role of social work across different areas of society. For more information, visit the CoSW National Social Work Month page.
