Abstract

In this capstone presentation, the pivotal role of Black women in the field of medical social work as catalysts of change within healthcare organizations will be explored. The research delves into the unique challenges faced by Black women in this profession and highlights their contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The presentation will cover systematic literature review, conceptual ideas, and practice application. The presentation will begin by contextualizing the importance of representation in healthcare settings, particularly in medical social work, where cultural competence and understanding are crucial. Through a qualitative literature review, this research identifies key strategies employed by Black women to advocate for systemic change, including mentorship, community engagement, and policy reform. We will also discuss the impact of these efforts on patient outcomes and organizational culture, emphasizing the necessity of diverse perspectives in decision-making processes. Attendees will gain insights into the intersectionality of race, gender, and profession, and understand the critical importance of fostering an inclusive workplace that values the contributions of Black women. This presentation aims to inspire future research and action towards creating equitable systems in healthcare, ensuring that the voices of all social workers are heard and valued. This presentation will offer a conceptual idea developed by the researcher to encourage healthcare organizations to promote DEI initiatives.
