Nurturing Parenting – Family Morals, Values And Rules

December 13, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm EST

Greetings foster/adoptive parents and caregivers!

Becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present its own unique challenges, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma.

The Foster Parent Training Program, housed at the UK TRC, is offering a virtual training series focused on equipping foster/adoptive parents and other caregivers with the information and tools required to meet the needs of these children through a trauma-informed perspective.

We hope you’ll join us for our upcoming session:

Resilience is the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, such as when you may be experiencing personal or family issues, a serious health concern, work stress, money worries, or other difficulties. It’s the ability to bounce back from challenges. Research suggests that having consistent support builds resilience in youth. Establishing house rules provide consistent guidelines which help children know what appropriate behavior is and teach important life skills like self-discipline and responsibility. Establishing strong core values can assist foster youth in learning how to care for themselves and others, and aid in their decision-making process. Without the moral basis of right and wrong, as children get older, they are likely to feel confused about limits, and may not be able to make good choices. During this foster parent training program parents will learn:

· To define family morals.

· To give examples of family morals.

· To relate family morals to family discipline.

· To define family values.

· To define the purpose of family rules.

· To increase parents’ skills in developing family morals, values, and rules.

Discipline comes from the Latin word discipulus, which means “to teach and guide.” The basis for teaching children discipline is in identifying a set of family morals and family values. This training will help parents set the foundational blocks for teaching self-discipline to foster youth.
