Gilean has a background in development studies and governance with an interest in social welfare policy and its impact on social and economic wellbeing. She has professional experience in the non-governmental sector where she worked in policy advocacy, human rights, and humanitarian assistance. Gilean has dedicated much of her work to supporting marginalized communities, especially people of migrant origin. Her research interests include social welfare policy, poverty, human rights, global social work, and social work education.
