Greetings foster/adoptive parents and caregivers!

Becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent can present its own unique challenges, especially when the children involved have a complex history of trauma. The Foster Parent Training Program, housed at the UK TRC, is offering in-person training series focused on equipping foster/adoptive parents and other caregivers with the information and tools required to meet the needs of these children through a trauma-informed perspective. Nationally, there are 400,000 children in foster care on any given day, with half (200,000) age 14 or older. 26,000 youth age out of foster care at age 18 each year (The National Foster Youth Institute, 2022). During this training parents will learn to address the unique needs of foster youth as they prepare their youth to age out of the foster care system:

  • Parents will learn skills needed to assist foster youth, transitioning into adulthood to have well-developed self-esteem and self-efficacy skills.
  • Participants will learn the basic things needed to live independently.
  • Participants will learn how to prepare youth for living independently.
  • Participants identify available resources for young adults.
  • Participants will learn how to search for affordable housing.
  • Participants will learn about work ethics and budgeting.

About the Speaker:

Ms. Morton Executive Director and Founder of Exhilarating INC. and is the former Program Administrator of the Division of Youth Services Youth Development Center for the City of Lexington, KY. Ms. Morton is a licensed social worker and certified master mental health coach, advocate and volunteer who brings a wealth of knowledge. Ms. Morton is community-focused and action-oriented. She has helped to develop programs and lead a team of dedicated employees toward teaching sustainable skills. More specifically, Ms. Morton created and directed the Gainesway Community Empowerment Center, LFUCG Summer Youth Employment Program and other enrichment programs that taught life and employment skills. Ms. Morton also volunteers in her community providing mentorship, technical expertise and grant-writing. She is an asset to her community and has countless awards for her dedicated service.

This training will take place face to face at the UK-COSW Training Resource Center located at 1648 McGrathiana, Ste. #400, Lexington, KY.
