LEXINGTON, Ky. — Deja Joseph, a senior at UK College of Social Work, has been awarded the Lyman T. Johnson Torch Bearer Award for her remarkable leadership, academic achievements, and dedication to community service.
The Lyman T. Johnson Torch Bearer Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate students who exemplify the spirit of UK’s first African American graduate student. Through her academic achievements, leadership roles, and dedication to social justice, Joseph has demonstrated the impact of student advocacy and community engagement.
Deja and her family relocated to Kentucky after Hurricane Katrina, a pivotal moment that shaped her drive and passion for social work. Now in her final year at UK, she is excelling academically, on track to graduate a year early. Beyond her academic achievements, Deja is deeply committed to service, working as a caregiver for a teen with special needs—a role she describes as profoundly influencing her aspirations in social work.
“This award is a reflection of the resilience my family instilled in me and the support I’ve received throughout my journey,” Deja shared. “My experiences, from Hurricane Katrina to now, have taught me the importance of service and giving back. This is just the beginning.”
The University of Kentucky celebrated Joseph’s achievements at the 34th Annual Lyman T. Johnson Awards Luncheon, held on October 11, 2024, during Homecoming Week. The ceremony honors individuals who embody Lyman T. Johnson’s enduring legacy of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
CoSW is proud to recognize Deja Joseph’s accomplishments and her unwavering commitment to creating a better future through education and service.
