Dr. Tarkington Newman, alongside doctoral students Levone Lee and Anne Stauffer, are featured in the 3rd edition of “Positive Youth Development through Sport.”

Lee presented his study on collegiate student-athletes’ preferences when discussing mental health with social agents like coaches, teammates and mental health professionals.

The award, presented by the Alliance of Social Workers in Sports (ASWIS), recognizes his dedication to creating environments where young athletes can thrive both on and off the field.

The Alliance of Social Workers in Sports awarded Drs. Moore and Newman with inaugural “Sport Social Work Legacy” awards at this year’s 10th anniversary gala.

Moore will take the place of Dr. Kalea Benner, who was named incoming dean in the social work program at IUPUI.

As Dr. Jasmine Cohen-Young finishes up her time with the University of Kentucky College of Social Work (CoSW), a journey that started with a basketball and a hoop culminates in a Doctorate of Social Work (DSW).

Arriving at the CoSW in the fall of 2023, Tarkington Newman is the director of the Sport Social Work Research Lab. Through his core research, Newman is looking at how sport can foster places where learning can occur, particularly related to social justice.
