Lexington, Ky. (Oct 3, 2024) – The University of Kentucky College of Social Work (CoSW) proudly announces Willis Bright will be inducted into the 2025 UK Alumni Association Hall of Distinguished Alumni.

This honor recognizes Bright’s lifetime of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing opportunities for underrepresented students and communities.

Bright, who resides in Indianapolis, graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. He was the first African-American student to receive the prestigious Algernon Sullivan Medallion, an early testament to his dedication to supporting underrepresented students.

After earning his Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 1968, Mr. Bright dedicated his career to youth development and enhancing African-American participation in the political process in Indiana. He served as an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota and led various impactful programs in Minnesota and Iowa. In 2003, he was inducted into the UK College of Social Work Hall of Fame while serving as the Director of Youth Programs at the Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis.

His notable credentials include serving as Chairman of the African American Coalition of Indianapolis and president of Bright Visions, Inc. He is a recipient of the Hazelett Award for Leadership in Grantmaking and in retirement, Bright continues his service with organizations like 100 Black Men and the Indianapolis African-American Quality of Life Initiative, focusing on family strengthening across multiple sectors.

Bright’s impact as a mentor is particularly noteworthy. Through the 100 Black Men Program and the Beautillion Militaire Scholarship Program, he has guided hundreds of young Black men, earning the affectionate nickname “The Oracle.”

Bright is a 2019 recipient of the UK Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award, has chaired the Class of 1966 Golden Wildcat Reunion committee, and served on the Alumni Association’s executive director search committee. His family established the Bright Family Fund for Youth Development in the UK College of Social Work, reflecting their commitment to supporting the next generation of social workers.
