Intimate Partner Violence and Elder Abuse: Help and Healing through a Social Determinants of Health Lens
Event Overview
This 90-minute session examines intimate partner violence (IPV) and elder abuse as interconnected public health issues shaped by social determinants of health (SDoH), structural inequities, and intersecting identities. Participants will explore how certain factors create barriers to help-seeking behaviors among survivors.
Drawing from current research on IPV as a social determinant of health, this session highlights the limitations of mainstream interventions and the critical need for culturally sensitive, community-centered approaches. Participants will examine how intersectionality compounds vulnerability to violence and shapes access to resources and support systems. The session emphasizes moving beyond viewing violence as a private matter to understanding it as a public health crisis requiring interdisciplinary responses.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this training, you will be able to:
- Analyze how social determinants of health (SDoH) influence vulnerability to intimate partner violence and elder abuse, and create barriers to help-seeking behaviors
- Apply an intersectional framework to understand how cultural context shape survivors’ experiences of violence and their interactions with systems of support
- Evaluate the characteristics of culturally sensitive, community-centered interventions for IPV and elder abuse that address survivors’ multiple needs (safety, housing, economic stability, spiritual support) while building trust and enhancing resilience
